When to consider in-home care

Look for the signs

 In-home care is a much needed service to enable our seniors, and people with disabilities or those in need of short term assistance to recover from an illness or surgery in the comfort of their home. Making the decision to get in-home care may not be easy, but here are a few signs that it may be an option to look into.

Medical Changes

  • Multiple visits to the emergency room
  • Recent hospital admission
  • A recent or scheduled surgery
  • Chronic illness with periods of instability
  • Difficulty managing medications
  • Changes in medications
  • An advanced neurological disease

Physical Changes

  • Frequent falls
  • Assistance required to leave the home due to a medical condition
  • Limits on physical mobility due to a stroke or general weakness
  • Poorly controlled pain
  • When assistance with walking and/or ambulating is required

Other Changes

  • Primary caregiver experiencing caregiver fatigue
  • An advanced neurological disease
  • Daily care of wounds or administering of treatments
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Social withdrawal
